How to Romantice Fitness for a Boost in Health and Wellness
Without further ado, here is how to romanticize fitness for a boost in health and wellness! Making your fitness journey more enjoyable will help you stay on track with more ease and determination.
Train Like a Warrior
So, you’re working out regularly, but hate it. It’s tiring, it’s tough, it’s work. A change in mindset might be all you need to overcome that mentality. Stop thinking of it as a punishment and start thinking of it as a goal. Train like a warrior, challenging yourself and pushing yourself to the limit with the intention of being stronger, faster, better.
Start setting goals and breaking them down into smaller, more achievable steps. Maybe you want to run a 5k, well, start jogging and walking today. Give yourself different sparks of inspiration too. Work out as if you’re going to meet Rocky in the ring. Train as if the zombie apocalypse is just around the corner and you want to be in the best shape of your life to protect yourself and your family. Eat like Royalty
A big part of fitness is nutrition. It can be pretty boring to eat chicken and rice every day if you are strength training and monitoring your meals. So don’t. I personally don’t tire of chicken due to all of the variations you can make, from orange chicken to rosemary garlic, to lemon pepper. However, everyone was to find their preference and cater to that. Food and nutrition are the building blocks our body uses to repair, grow, and thrive, but it is more than that. A good meal is happiness, a good meal is nostalgia and love.
Eat well, but in a way that takes your preferences and tastes into account. Find ways to make your favorite meals more healthy, such as switching out the heavy cream in a recipe for greek yogurt or using fresh vegetables instead of canned. Eating like royalty does not mean breaking the bank to splurge on expensive meals. Buy in bulk, learn to freeze leftovers for quick meal prep, and enjoy the little things.
Give Yourself Treats
Life is simultaneously short and the longest thing you’ll ever do. There is no point in the future where you’ll say, man, I’m so glad I skipped out on my favorite pie my mother makes during the holidays. Fitness is about balance, so learn to balance. Have the treats you like in moderation.
If you restrict food, you will probably binge eat too much of it the next time you have a “cheat day.” To be honest though, what worked for me was cutting out sugar entirely for months, going keto and low carb. This is because I was highly addicted to sugar, I would even sprinkle sugar on my salad, it was rough. After a couple of months of cutting sugar, it felt better without question. With no pressing urge to get a sugar rush, I was able to add all my favorites back into my meals, including bread, desserts, pasta, and more. This may not be for everyone, though, and I definitely missed bread! All this to say, it’s okay to eat treats, enjoy the foods you love, and permit yourself to enjoy your favorites. As long as you don’t go overboard!
Make Fitness a Celebration
Some people think that if you pat yourself on the back during a fitness journey, you’ll lose motivation to improve. Being happy with where you are is the death of progress, they say. This cannot be further from the truth. Fitness is all about progress with little concern for the destination.
This means that you should be celebrating every success you come across on this journey. Anytime you hit a goal or accomplish a step towards a larger goal, you are allowed to celebrate. You are allowed to treat yourself, you are allowed to enjoy progress, and you’re allowed to pat yourself on the back. This is a simple way to romanticize fitness, simply permitting yourself to appreciate yourself. Working out, eating well, and going through the motions of fitness is not a punishment, it is a reward, and celebrating reminds us of that.
Journal with Intention
What place does journaling have in fitness? It is an activity that boasts many mental health benefits, so how can this help us in fitness? Writing in a journal can be a great way to train the mind, which will allow us to act and react differently. Journaling and fitness go hand in hand, as there are many ways to use a journal to progress further in your fitness journey. This can be done using many journaling techniques.
You can use the power of positive affirmation to motivate yourself along your fitness journey. Journal with affirmations such as I can do this, I am working towards this goal, I can accomplish what I set my mind to, etc. This way, you start training yourself so that you can accomplish what you set out to do. The mind gives up before the body does so training the mind allows us to push our body. Journaling can also be used to track progress which can make celebrating any improvement easier to monitor. We may not notice, but every time we work out, we are getting stronger, we are giving ourselves health and wellness, and journaling can be a way to monitor that.
You can track nutrition, weights, running times, and everything you need for a smooth progression in ability. Remember to be honest with yourself. If you choose to journal to track, track everything accurately and give yourself the best opportunity to improve.
Train with Kindness
Not all gym sessions are going to produce a personal record. There will be days when you are tired, where you lack motivation, and where you just don’t want to work out. You can approach these days in one of two ways.
If there is a day when you are not feeling your best and don’t want to work out, try to work out anyway. There is no need to push yourself to give 120% though. On days when you feel down, be kinder to yourself and give about 60% effort. Moving might even help you feel better as exercise can help release happiness chemicals that can improve mental health greatly. Your second option on days when you just don’t want to work out is to not work out. Really, it’ll be okay. You aren’t going to lose strength just because you skip a gym session, you aren’t going to suddenly lose all your cardiovascular health benefits if you decide not to do cardio today, etc. Give yourself rest days when you need them. This sort of kindness can take you further on your fitness journey.
The Takeaway
Start to romanticize fitness for a boost in health and wellness. This will make your fitness journey much more enjoyable and much less of a punishment. Fitness is about celebrating what the body can do and will do in the future as opposed to stressing yourself out by trying to push yourself. Romanticizing fitness makes the little things on this wellness journey more achievable and delightful.
