What is Skincare

Skincare is an act of self-care in which we support and treat the skin. This can be done through a variety of products and practices, and it does not look the same for every person.

The sunblock you put on in the morning? Yeah, that counts as skincare!

The way I would use shampoo to wash my face quickly while I was showering? That…was bad skincare, but skincare nonetheless.

Why Skincare is Necessary

Skincare is used to support the skin, skincare is used to treat the skin. The main goal of skincare is to help keep your skin in a healthy condition. It is to provide a bit of extra protection, nourishment, and boost its ability to do its job right.

The skin, not just of the face but the entire body, is considered an organ, and its main job is to protect our internal parts from the outside world, even protecting us from dangerous microbes!

The skin itself even has its own microbiome, similar to the one in our gut, that is composed of good bacteria to support the daily functions of the skin.

It has millions of receptors that let us know if something is hot or cold, and helps us sense pain to get away from hazardous substances.

And as stated, skincare can also treat conditions. The right skincare routine can help reduce oiliness, acne, dry spots, dermatitis, and much more.

The Benefits of a Good Skincare Routine

A good skincare routine can help treat a variety of conditions. Certain ingredients perform certain functions in supporting the skin. For example, ceramides, lipids found in skin, retain moisture and prevent harmful germs from entering the body.

Skincare products with this ingredient helps to strengthen this part of the skin, allowing it to function better.

Skincare can help fight acne, dryness, and signs of aging.

It is not just essential for how you look, it is essential for your overall health.

What to do when skincare feels like a chore

But as we said, some days skincare feels like a burden, something forced upon you. It makes it difficult to enjoy doing anything if it feels like a chore.

Here are 5 tips to try when skincare feels like a chore!

Acknowledge Skincare is a Choice

Skincare will always be a choice. It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you wear make-up, sunscreen, or anything, skincare is something no one can force you to do.

Remembering you have a choice in the matter is a great step to making skincare feel more like a treat than a necessity.

Make it a Ritual, not a Routine

Set aside time each day for skincare, in a way you want to practice it.

Play some tunes and try to remember you’re doing this for you, not for anyone else!

Making time daily will help turn skincare into a habit you look forward to as opposed to something you have to squeeze in and rush through.

Remember Skincare is a Journey

Sometimes it becomes about protecting and nurturing the skin. Think about skincare as progress, not perfection.

Sure, we might want to clear up our skin or get rid of dry spots or reduce oiliness, but that can take time. Therefore, during the journey, the main goal can just be to nurture and support.

We can remember the importance of our skin and why we are doing what we are doing to help nurture it.

Make it more Fun

Have some steps in your skincare to make it more fun! Maybe you do a sheet mask once a week or try making some DIY skincare products.

It will always be easy to make skincare more fun. Try experimenting with new products to see if you like anything better! Remember to patch test on your wrist to make sure you have no bad reaction to new skincare!

Also, try to introduce new products to your skin one at a time, just in case you do have a reaction, you can instantly know which product caused it.

Have a Reset Day

When you feel a bit overwhelmed, and truly don’t want to skincare at all, make that a reset day.

Forget serums, forget face masks, forget treatments, forget exfoliation.

Simply, clean your skin with a moisturizer that feels good to use, and apply a simple moisturizer.

That’s it, that’s the assignment.

Apply some sunblock in the morning for extra credit.

Sunblock is one of the easiest ways to take care of the skin, protecting it from the harmful rays of the sun, and ensuring its health in the long run.

The Takeaway

Skincare will always be a choice.

Our perception of it is dependent on knowing the function of the skin and why many claim it’s necessary.

Our skin protects and supports us, so in turn, we can take some steps to protect and support it in return.

Finding ways to make skincare fun can help us become more willing to do it.

Make it a ritual, a time for meditation and reflection, or play some music and make it a time to dance. Don’t be afraid to try out new products to find something you really enjoy.

Remember that health starts from within! Sometimes, what you eat affects your skin, so make sure you are eating great whole food, fruits, vegetables, healthy carbs, and protein.

Your nutrition becomes the building blocks your body uses to grow.
